[edit]and the upcoming America's Cup to be hosted in Fremantle in 1986. I removed this statement from the article as the line was reopened in July and the America's Cup wasnt won until September it couldn't have been a factor in the decision to reopen the line. Gnangarra 12:05, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
Dead right Gnangarra. There was a massive petition from a group calling itself the "Friends of the Railways", which was disregarded. The ALP made "put the trains back" a major part of their 1980 election platform, and this continued to the 1983 election. Ray O'Connor even floated an idea of "rail buses" in 1982, such was the political issue. The America's Cup had nothing to do with it whatsoever.
Temporary closure
[edit]There was a strong protest to the closure of the Fremantle line. Poor patronage may have been political spin. The trend was toward LA freeway models, and Court had few votes to lose in Freo. But I'm speculating. Fred.e 17:19, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
The line doesn't just service Fremantle, there's Cottesloe, Claremont, Nedlands, Subiaco etc on that line too. Trains were seen as "old hat" at the time. Buses offered flexibilty, as they could be used on other routes outside of peak time. On top of that, the rolling stock was getting old, which made the journeys more unpleasant and slower. Court didn't want to put the money into buying more rolling stock, and they had their road plan. West Coast Highway was to be run down Servetus Street (anyone from the time can remember the long campaign from residents against it), and the idea was that it would run along the old railway reserve to Fremantle. Perhaps that was one of the reasons why old Court wanted to end the railway service. Also the way Perth was developing at the time was north-south, with the Freeway following it. Trains didn't service these new areas. It's been the purchase of new rolling stock, and above all the new lines which have transformed the rail system in Perth.
What the ...?
[edit]Since when does an article like this need two graphical route maps? something needs to be taken to the talk page before doing something like that....SatuSuro 07:37, 11 March 2008 (UTC)
sinking
[edit]Should we add some information regarding the sinking of the line between Lake St and the Horseshoe Bridge? It is very relevant information. --Klltr (talk) 09:59, 5 April 2011 (UTC)
- Yep, include a reference (Crusoe8181 (talk) 11:30, 5 April 2011 (UTC)).
- I notice someone has got it wrong when it comes to temporarilly rerouting the line. I have seen the track construction first hand and the temporary tracks will be located north of the current tracks, which means they will run into platforms 7 and 9 as usuall. There is even a photot at http://www.pta.wa.gov.au/perthcitylink/RailProject/Imagegallery/tabid/466/language/en-AU/Default.aspx that prooves this to be case. I will edit the page to remove the missleading information, and would like to know where the author got his info from in the first place.--Klltr (talk) 10:02, 8 December 2011 (UTC)
- Looks like the issue with the platform changes has been fixed.--Klltr (talk) 04:27, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
Okay, can somebody please fix the line guide so that it shows the new tunnel. I don't know how to do this. Thanks. --Klltr (talk) 03:25, 29 June 2013 (UTC)
Cultural reference
[edit]Should this section be deleted? It contains a single reference to a film that seems unknown.Betterkeks (talk) 07:27, 5 August 2018 (UTC)
- No - hardly unknown - commercial-released, well-known and clearly relevant. The Drover's Wife (talk) 07:38, 5 August 2018 (UTC)
